The "Lollipop" Stigma

**By Gabriel Williams | April 2026**

There’s a specific kind of phone call you get when you’ve built something real in this industry. It usually starts with a lot of praise—they love the sound, they love the look, they love the "vibe." But lately, I’ve noticed a pattern that needs to be addressed. It’s the condescending assumption that because I’m a rapper, I'm a fuckin' lollipop!

I just had a call from a drumstick company based in the North of England. They wanted to talk about an…

PSA: To Every "Promoter" in My DMs—Read This First.

Look,

I’ve had about a thousand of these conversations. They usually start with the same script: "I help artists get more streams and visibility. Want me to show you results?"

It’s the same "Independence Paywall" mirage. Someone promises you the moon for a fee, but they’ve never actually touched the ground. If you’re a "promoter" looking to work with me—or any artist who actually values their craft—you need to understand the new reality of the game.

1. The Music is the Value (Not the…

The $2,500 Mirage: Why I’m Done with the "Independence Paywall"

I just got off the phone with a "promo" company. It was my 100th version of this exact conversation. New company name on the letterhead, same tired script, same hollow promises.

The representative looked me in the eye—virtually, at least—and told me he could "guarantee" a charting single for me. The price tag for this instant success? $2,500.

The wildest part? He hadn’t even pressed play on my music.

What Are We Even Talking About?

Think about the absurdity of that for a second. We…

A Lame: The Commons

I knew how to fight. I had a older homie I used to hang around after my people split. He was a WWF fanatic. Getting out of the ‘Boston Crab’ is a bitch. Boxing was just geometry to me. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, right? That wasn’t hard to pick up. I wasn’t “hood” though. Not really.

My aunt bought me a skateboard, and I hated the thought that some onlooker might steal it while I was whoopin’ somebody’s ass over something I probably didn’t wanna be involved…

Paradise Studios: The Homies

I recently linked back up with an old homie from Omaha, El Genius. We used to rock a lot of shows together, back in the day. He's a dope Emcee! He was headed out to Ashland, NE to meet up with some other homies, Phlame Classic and Jay Keys at Paradise Studios, to get started on a new song. I asked if I could tag along--I hadn't seen Phlame or Keys in a while, either--and that ended up being perfect, 'cause he needed a ride anyway. Blessings! We out!

Paradise is set all the way up. This ain't a…
